Interview with Matt Grundy
Bassist, Guitarist, Singer/Songwriter & Harmonica Player
Going All In Music, Sobriety, Family & Self-Awareness – Episode 031 of Shifting Perceptions Podcast
Matt Grundy plays bass, rhythm guitar, harmonica, and sings backing vocals and for professional surfer turned rock star Donavon Frankenreiter. Matt is also nurturing a solo music career.
In this very unfiltered conversation, shares the highs and lows of parenting, the sacrifices that go into building a career in music, and life after being swallowed whole and spit out by addiction.
Contrary to popular belief, musicians and artists aren’t always hungry for fame. We are fortunate for souls like Matt who really couldn’t care less about where he was or how much he was making – all he needs is the music.
This interview is a really special one for us. Not only are we huge fans of Matt but over the past 10-12 years, he has become a dear friend and is someone that we have literally been around the Earth and back with.
Grundy is one of those gentle giants that you cannot help but fall in love with. We always meet in the middle on topics like jazz, poetry, Sam Harris and self-awareness…but realizing that he’s also a ridiculous musician on top of the rest is motivating and humbling.
We think that if you asked Grundy he would say he is just along for the ride…but when you hear all he has on his mind and all he is up to, you quickly realize that he is far more than a backup musician.
Matt Grundy Quotes
“I couldn’t be getting hammered and then waking up at 3 in the morning changing diapers. There’s just no way. I had to make this happen and I wanted to — It’s not like it was hard, because I had this little
angel to take care of and it was amazing.” -Matt Grundy
“When you first start playing music, you’re lucky to even scrape together 250 bucks a week. For me, I didn’t care about the lack of security in it. I was willing to live in my car forever if it meant I was going to be able to play the guitar. It didn’t sound like something that was okay — it sounded favorable to me”. -Matt Grundy
