Q&A: SURF ARTIST JAY ALDERS
FOAM DRILLS ARTIST JAY ALDERS ABOUT INSPIRATION, PET PEEVES AND QUANTUM PHYSICS.
When he was a kid, Jay Alders decorated his neighbor’s sidewalk with chalk and then spray painted a clear coat over it so that only a sand blaster could remove his work. But what was merely an inconvenience for Alder’s community was also the tell-tale sign of a future artist.
We first fell in love with Jay Alders’ work when we spotted his distorted and figurative art on some local skateboards and surfboards. We tracked him down to hear more about what inspires him:
Which artists do you admire?
Some of my favorites are Dali, Klimt, Escher, Raphael, Van Gogh and Ingres.
What’s your favorite location to paddle out?
I have a lot of places to explore and surf still. But of the places I’ve surfed, Oahu was the most magical by far. The natural glory surrounding the area, the crystal clear warm water, the people, the vibes and picture perfect waves were just overwhelming.
Who are some of the bands you’re loving right now?
Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Doors, Dave Matthews, G. Love, Dr. Dre, Mozart, F.U.N., Bob Marley, Echo Movement, Miles Davis, Jack Johnson and old school Metallica.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
A person licking napkins bugs me out. I used to be in a breakdance crew; I love reading books on quantum physics and psychology.
What can we expect to see from you in the coming months?
I just finished album covers for Echo Movement and Gabe Gomez, as well as a package illustration for Life’s Lemonade. I’m excited to expand my chosen subject matter out towards other passions of mine, too. I’m pretty keen on doing more live art on stage with musicians and collaborating with other creative folks.
Jay will be attending Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida this September.
