I talk to a lot of artists and one problem that comes up more than most other things is that most of your problems as a creative or just as a human being is that we overthink things way too much.
I hear from artists about not knowing what kind of canvas to buy or..
“I don’t know what kind of medium I should use”
“What kind of canvas should I get?”
“what kind of brushes should I buy?”
…Let me Google it for 7 hours.
What ends up happening is all these passions we have just end up on the shelf. Most people don’t take their idea anywhere because they’re overthinking all of the steps instead of just doing it.
I had this piece of wood in my studio for a couple of years and today it was just calling out to me and I wanted to paint without thinking at all because it’s just really relaxing it’s really fun.
And so I looked at the wood and as you could see from the beginning of this process, I was really just painting in between the lines.
It was almost like one of those paint-by-numbers type things in my head. I looked at it and this is exactly what I saw. You might have looked at the same piece of wood and seen something completely different.
Chances are you would have. But for me this is what I saw and I just started painting and I just went with the flow and that’s really important to do whether you’re artist or parents or running your own business or working for someone else or just trying to get by day by day.
Sometimes you have to just look what’s right in front of you start somewhere. Anywhere. See where it goes. Just trust it’s going to take you somewhere that makes sense.
Nature seems to have it all figured out. A tree doesn’t struggle to grow, a flower doesn’t find resistance in blooming.
These patterns we see all around us – whether literal patterns in wood or patterns in our lives, in a lot of cases the answers are already there. It’s all part of nature we are part of nature.
We’re all one.
Love,
Jay
